Wood Fired Chawan 12
This beautiful handmade Japanese tea bowl (chawan) is formed by wheel-thrown with Malaysia local wild clay. Natural wood fired, rustic surface. It is glazed with Shino glaze. The bottom is unglazed to create contrast between the texture of the raw clay and the glazed surface.
This piece of unique artwork would make a great addition to your home, a nice part of an existing collection, or a great gift for your loved one.
Wood-fired in wood burning kiln to cone 10/11 (about 1300 C) with reduction.
Wood fires produce fly ash and volatile salts. This complex interaction of ash, salts, minerals in the clay and the flame itself are what give wood fired pots their unique characteristics.
Reduction leaves its mark on both clay bodies and glazes. Clay body color is deepened, sometimes moving to rich oranges and reds and sometimes to gray colors. A strong visual texture is created by dark spots that occur in a random but pleasing manner over the surface of the piece.
